About Education

Since living in Orange County, I have supported education in my various public and volunteer positions. I understand how important education is for the future of our state and our nation. When I served as an assistant public defender, one fact rose to the top. If you fail to succeed in school, you may find yourself involved with the criminal justice system. I believe that education is one of the primary ways for us to insure that we will have a stable community and little crime. I believe that education is one of the two most important services that Orange County provides.
  • I supported and voted for the Schools Adequate Public Facilities Ordinance (SAPFO):

    • The Schools Adequate Public Facilities Ordinance and a greater tightening of the ordinance to prevent overcrowding in the schools;

  • I support the maintenance of the library and school funds to pay for future repairs to older schools and construction of new schools.

    • I believe that government should provide access to quality education to all citizens, including access for adults for retraining to obtain higher paying and higher quality jobs.

    • The expedited approval of:
      • Morris Grove Elementary
      • Carrboro High School

  • The Town’s continuing goal of making all of the schools walkable and safe including:

    • Safe Routes to School Action Plan for Carrboro and McDougle Elementary schools

    • The Town’s application for a grant from the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes To School Infrastructure And Non-Infrastructure Grants

  • I have served as the Education Chair of the NAACP, where I advocated for increased focus on eliminating the achievement gap.

  • During my service on the Orange County Dispute Settlement Center, I supported and continue to support the Youth in Schools & Community and Restorative Justice for Youth programs
